COIR YARN

A short tour of the production
of commercial grade Hop Twine
from Sri Lanka...
Sri Lanka enjoys virtually a monopoly in the processing and export of coir fibre as raw material.

Gathering the coconut husks

Elephant

Retting

The husks are separated from the nuts and are retted in lagoons up to ten months. The retted husks are then beaten with wooden mallets manually to produce the golden fibre.
Coir Twine is mechanically manufactured using coir fibre with a guide thread in the center. It is mainly used in the Hop-Industry. Coir Twine is exported in the form of spools or balls and then packed in the form of ballots. Strings (pieces) in the bale form as well.

Coir Yarn is manufactured either with white or brown Fibre and is manually spun. Coir yarn is exported in bundles.
Uses

Manufacture of mats/matting and carpets, brush mats/matting, netting/ Geo textiles (Landscaping and on embankments of road construction for prevention of soil erosion). Also used in the building construction and as agricultural twine.

PROCESSED COIR FIBRE PRODUCTS

Manufacture of finished products has also been stepped up to a significant level during the last five years. The country's exports comprise both the yarn and finished products such as nets, rope, carpets, matting, brush mats, rugs, wall hanging etc.
