Homegrown Hop Yards

2005 Growing Season

We have a deck with a southern exposure.  I planted these hops for shade in '04 and this is a photo of them in 6/30/05.  The most vigorous are the red vine and Willamette.

Topsham, Maine

2nd year Magnum, Mt Hood and East Kents.

Should get a small harvest out of them this year. Next year will reduce bines to 2 per plant. Because I'm in Maine, I gave them two years to develop a root ball (didn't cut back any bines, just let them go). Next year we get serious, they're going into the soil and should be hardy enough. Seemed to make it through the winter ok in the barrels, although I did bring them inside.

As you can see the hops are putting out some
absolutely incredible amount of beautiful cones
this year. They appear to be around 2-2 1/2" long
